This coin is struck on a 1 oz. .999 fine silver planchet and bears a face value of 1 Onza. The silver Libertad was introduced in 1982, four years prior to the introduction of the American Silver Eagle.
The Libertad coin is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful numismatic items in existence. This early version of the round has an obverse design that was introduced on the circulating gold "Centenario" 50 Peso coin. The image is of the Angel of Independence in the foreground and the volcanoes from a pre-Columbian legend in the background. The reverse design features the Mexican Golden Eagle in a dynamic pose, eating a snake while perched on a cactus.
Proof coins are struck specifically for collectors utilizing a process with polished dies and planchets. Typically proofs benefit from special handling and limited availability.
